July 2013 Quilt Group Meet

Hello everyone! 
 

Challenge Blocks

Today has been a really cold and wet day here in Melbourne, but the group braved the weather and met up to show off the latest round of challenge blocks.  Most were the stained glass effect - and boy are they stunning!  There were a few crazy blocks on show as well from April's challenge. 

The last challenge block will be "tessellations".  Ruth (the convenor of this year's challenge) explained that tessellations are created when one or more geometrical shapes, such as hexagons, squares, triangles, diamonds etc are used to form patterns.  Here are the samples that Ruth created:

As this is the last of the monthly challenge blocks ALL blocks must be completed by our next meeting in August!  It will be fantastic to see them all complete and awaiting the next creative chapter of turning them into quilts!

 This is Caillou's first quilt.  Caillou is our youngest member at 10 years of age and he completed this quilt when he was 4.5 years old!!!  It also won an award at Jeff's Shed!

 

 This is Caillou's second quilt with lots of colourful dinosaurs.  He completed this one when he was 7 years old!

As you can see the lorikeets and flowers have been thread painted and extra dimension has been created with the lorikeets being 'padded out'

 



As usual, the quality and variety of everyone's work was fantastic and it will only be a matter of time for next month's show and tell.

A few upcoming events

For those of you local to (or visiting) the northern suburbs of Melbourne, a solo exhibition of Textile Artist, Jan Lowe, titled "Journeys in Cloth and Stitch" is being held at Bundoora Homestead until 7 July 2013.  Click on the photo for a close up of the exhibition details.

June 2013 Meeting

Hello again!  Today saw the TPG Quilt Group meet up to see what everyone has been up to since the quilt show in May. 

Last months' round of challenge blocks - the crazy block - were on show (along with a few stragglers from previous months!):

Ruth presented the group with this month's challenge block, the stained glass effect.  Her demonstration blocks are a great sample of what can be created with this technique:

My mind is already ticking over with stained glass images.  I'm sure this will be the case with everyone else in the group as the interest these blocks sparked was quite intense!

Show and tell saw a few quilt tops and bags in particular grabbing everyone's attention. (I apologise in advance for a couple of blurry photos!)

2012 Challenge Quilts

Our recent quilt show saw some of the member's challenge quilts from last year on display.  Here are some of the quilts that were a part of that challenge:

Hallelujah!!!

Photos of the show have now been posted and listed under the 2013 TPG Quilt Show tab.  Please head over there to take a virtual tour of our show.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to sort out the black bar issue with the photos.  This will have to be a work in progress but you can still see the quilts and appreciate what our group's members have created.

Our First Quilt Show!

The past weekend saw The Patchwork Gallery Quilt Group Inc. hold its very first quilt show!  All of the work on show was stunning and displayed the fantastic and broad range of talent that is within our group.  It's a bit too early for the tally of numbers and how much we raised for Banksia Palliative Care but the people came and the feedback was positive and incredibly encouraging. 

Deb Layt (President of the group) welcomed visitors once they had entered with her stand displaying many quilts, patterns, projects and fabrics for purchasing as well as some foundation piecing that she was creating on the spot.

 

The first prize raffle quilt and second prize gourmet food and wine hamper (seen below) were drawn and won by some very lucky people.  (The hamper was being coveted by everyone in the group!)

  

There was a winner for selling the most raffle tickets (you romped it in Di!) and the winner of the visitor/people's choice quilt was Therese's "Hawaiian Dawn" quilt.  Congratulations Therese - it is such a stunning quilt in every way!  Leanne Kaufmann , our long arm quilter, from the group was responsible for the outstanding quilting on it.

Vera Fachara, another long arm quilter with the group, also had a stand set up showcasing her quilting talents along with fabric for purchase.

 

Kate from Kate's Sewing Centre in Bundoora was there selling all manner of patchwork and quilting things. 

 We also had on show the Victorian Quilters Inc. Travelling Suitcase 2013 4 Seasons Challenge.

The CWA ladies put on a fabulous spread of hot food, sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, delicious cakes and slices, homemade jams for purchasing and tea and coffee.  Everyone at the show was well catered for.  Thanks ladies!

Everyone from the group, in particular those who were involved in the conception and organisation of the show, did a truly amazing job and helped made it the success that it was. 

There are HEAPS of photos from the show (around 100!) but too many for this post.  You will be able to find them in a new tabbed page titled 2013 Quilt Show.  They will be posted asap - there seems to be a few issues with the photos transferring across correctly (ie, those awful black bars in the photos above!!).
