September 2013 Group Meet

Hi everyone!

Spring has arrived here in Melbourne and despite having a few cold and wet days, a few sunny ones have snuck in giving us a taste of what is to come.

Our group meet on 21 September was jam packed with plenty of show and tell and a guest speaker, Gladys, who very kindly took the time to share some of her quilting work with the group. I will keep Gladys' quilts as a separate post as I have about 80 photos all up to show you!

First up we had the remaining challenge blocks which were handed in:

The can now be sorted, redistributed and then turned into quilts.

For show and tell we had the usual quilting goodness to admire, along with a few extra special items:

 Helen E also had a spectacular log cabin barn raising pattern quilt top.  This one is made from jelly roll stips cut in half!  Helen is known as the jelly roll queen and she certainly didn't disappoint this month!

Robyn's super king sized quilt. The decorative bias border was hand sewn onto the quilt, and it was quilted by Leanne Kaufmann quite a few years ago

 

Robyn had her grandmother's 1926 wedding dress in for show and tell

 

 as well as her mum's 1956 lace wedding dress, which Robyn wore on her wedding day in 1975 (the veil is Robyn's)

 

                                   and a snapshot of the dresses together - their history spanning nearly 50

                                   years (and then some, given they are still in fantastic condition in 2013!)

 

Once show and tell was over we got ready for Gladys' quilt show.  I'll leave that for the next post though as there were a lot of quilts and they certainly deserve their own post.

August 2013 Group Meet

Hello everyone! 
Another month has flown by.  Its going to be December in no time at this rate.

Today saw the group meet up in our new premises in leafy Lower Plenty.  The space is fantastic and will provide much more room for our growing group and sew-ins held on meeting days. 

The group was missing a few of its members today (it is still winter and the bugs are still rampant unfortunately) but the final challenge blocks were handed in and we had a few items for show and tell.

On the challenge block front, the last ones handed in today were diverse:

Everyone is excited about the potential outcomes from these blocks.  Now they are in they will be sorted and then handed back out (not necessarily to the original owners) to be turned into quilts.  It will be very interesting to see the end results and the fruits of all our labour.

Show and tell included the following items:

 Helen G showed us her finished quilt top which was started by Glenda. Unfortunately the photo doesn't do the fabric justice.  It was lovely and rich in colour and pattern

 Christine also had a WIP which she has been making by paper piecing with scraps.  Its called "My quilting life"

 Robyn brought in her award winning quilt "Mamas garden".  It won 2nd prize (for 2 person professional quilt category) in the recent quilt show held at Jeff's Shed (Stitches and Craft Show).  Leanne Kaufmann, also a member of the group, quilted it.  It is stunning in every way!

After the meeting concluded we got started on the next project for Banksia Palliative Care.  It will be ready by the end of the year and once a bit more work has been done on it, we can show you some sneak peeks.

A Quillo

Hello everyone!

In case you haven't noticed, we have a free quillo tutorial posted in the Tips, Tricks and Tutorials tab.  It is a great quick project turning the humble quilt into a pillow and is especially loved by kids.

I even made one myself.  It's a pretty basic one but already is getting plenty of use.  You could however, make a detailed quilt top and embellish the pocket as much or as little as you like.

I now realise pale pink with little ducks doesn't photograph too well for the blog but these fabrics have been in the cupboard for awhile and were perfect for this project.  I also pieced together the wadding to use up some leftovers.  I have put up a couple of extra photos in the tutorial of the process. 

Have a go, they are quick and easy!

July 2013 - Goings On

Hello again! 

We thought we would keep you informed with a few of the goings on here at The Patchwork Gallery quilt group. 

As of next month we will be holding our meetings in Lower Plenty.  Everyone is excited at the prospect of our new venue and the spacious room it will provide the group with to move and grow in its creative journey.

We also had our youngest member attend our meeting today, Caillou.  He is 10 years old and has already created an award winning quilt (which he made when he was 4.5 years old!!!).  Have a look at the previous post which showcases Caillou's quilts in show and tell.

An important event to remember to diarise is the Victorian Quilters Inc. Quilt Showcase 2013 being held at the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Show at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, South Wharf from 25 - 28 July 2013.  Two of our group members, Deb and Robyn, will have quilts exhibited in the Showcase, and our quilt group will also be represented.  So please come along to our table/stall and say hello while you are visiting the show.

We also have an excerpt from the latest Banksia Palliative Care Service Inc. newsletter which referred to our May quilt show.  We were able to raise over $2,000 for Banksia Palliative Care! (click on the photo)
