Out and about
Hello everyone.
Its a wet and cold day here in Melbourne. We were sweltering earlier in the week with 36 degrees and today, well, it's hailing and about 13 degrees as I type. Crazy.
Anyway, quilt shows for this weekend are limited to the AUSTRALIAN QUILTERS ASOCIATION INC EVENT: AQUIP - "Water, Warp and Weft" which is still running:
When: November 14th -December 21st
Where: Whitehorse Art Space, Whitehorse Road, Box Hill
There's only 20 sleeps til Christmas day so if you haven't already done so, it's time to get into gear for present shopping (and even making??) as well as thinking about all that glorious Christmas food!
Until next week, try and stay dry, warm and sane.
Thanks for reading!

Well this week's out and about post will be a very short one as there aren't any quilt shows or exhibitions being held around Victoria this upcoming weekend. Maybe its a sign to get to work at home on our own quilt projects??
Anyhoo, regardless of what you get up to this weekend, make sure it's a good one.

Need a new quilt project?
Then all you need to do is head down to your local Spotlight and get a copy of the most recent Project Patchwork.
I'm not sure if this is a regular publication, but the reason we are promoting it here is because our very own Deb Layt has a beautiful quilt project in it.

The full instructions are in the book and it only costs $0.99. Bargain!! It also has a heap of other projects. For a full look at the quilt click here.

October 2013 group meet
Hello everyone!
It's been a windy and warm day here in Melbourne, and it's not even summer yet. Just a taste of things to come it seems.
Yesterday the group met up for its monthly meeting in Lower Plenty.
First things first - congratulations are in order to two of our members, Robyn and Deb as they both had quilts on the inside cover of the latest Vic Quilters Inc. magazine!!
We also had a random draw for the latest challenge blocks which were all collated and packaged up. It was a bit like Christmas given our packages were all lovingly wrapped up and we had no idea whose blocks we were going to get. So the challenge is now on to turn those blocks into some lovely quilts.
There wasn't as much on for show and tell as usual but still some lovely things to look at and admire.
That's about all for now. Until next time, take care and thanks for reading!

Robyn and Deb's quilts are the top 2 (respectively)

The Banksia Palliative Care memorial quilt has been finished and will be presented to them shortly. It will then be available for families to place a memorial "leaf" on the tree to represent loved ones who have received support from the centre.
Sue showed us her turtle applique which she undertook at a workshop at the recent Taupo, New Zealand sewing convention. Its still a work in progress but looks beautiful
Another of Sue's work undertaken at the sewing convention which comprises organza flowers which have been soldered together! So delicate and intricate
Another of Sue's creations - a glasses case
Therese had a stunning sampler quilt which she created using the Westalee rulers system. It was quilted by our own Leanne Kaufmann
and a close up of Therese's precise patchwork skills and Leanne's amazing quilting
Therese had another quilt that showcased her family's history. Based on a Quiltmania pattern she created this quilt using her dad's ties (the dark central squares), club badges from both her parents, old building keys from when her dad was a builder and buttons from her grandfather who fought in Gallipoli. It was beautiful and sentimental
We got another look at Robyn's "stepping stones" quilt which is at the basting stage (done by Leanne Kaufmann)
New member Judy had this lovely 3d windmill quilt which she made for her niece
We also got to see Judy's textures and tucks quilts which she has been doing in class with Deb. It looked amazing!!!
and a close up of Judy's lovely work
Ruth had a bright and geometric (is there a tessellation in there???!) community quilt
and a close up of Ruth's quilting - especially the brilliant use of her machine's decorative stitches in the border
Ruth's 2012 finished challenge quilt
Linda's WIP applique block from the Wind in the Whiskers block of the month quilt
Helen E's Christmas quilt - its not that far away!
Helen's crocheted owls - just for something different!
And last but not least, we thought we would show you the flyer from the Eastern Palliative Care quilt show. I appreciate the show is over but it does give you an insight to the thinking behind their (recent) show and the one they are planning for next year (click on the photo for a larger view):That's about all for now. Until next time, take care and thanks for reading!

News
One project that is very dear to TPG's heart is the Tree Project. By way of background, after the devastating 7 February 2009 Victorian bushfires the Australian Blacksmiths Association (Victoria) set out to create a forged gumtree which would be a memorial to the people who lost their lives in the bushfires, to honour the tireless people who defended others and to stand as a symbol of regeneration for the community.TPG quilt group has sponsored a leaf to be added to the tree.

Gladys' Quilt Exhibition
Hello again.
This post is totally dedicated to Gladys, one of our member's mother-in-law who came along to our group meeting yesterday to showcase some of the quilts she has made over the past 32 years. She began quilting in 1981 and what we got to see was only a fraction of her quilting work. About half of the quilts we saw (the first half of photos) were hand pieced, hand appliqued, hand embroidered and/or hand quilted!! Gladys' work is prolific, stunning and inspirational. Have a look at what we got to see yesterday (and for close ups just click on the photos to get a better look):
Gladys, if you happen to be reading this post, thank you so much for taking the time to come to our group meeting to show us your amazing quilts and tell us the stories behind them! A huge thanks also to Therese and Bruce for being the display stands.
